With just under half of all Europeans living in flats and tenements, improving the energy efficiency in these buildings is essential to meet climate change, energy efficiency and fuel poverty targets.

Reflections on the Retrofit Commonwealth Games

This summer Glasgow played host to the XX Commonwealth Games. With 70% of the venues used already in use before the Games, retrofit played a key role. Following the construction woes of the Delhi Games, this provided reassurance from the outset for the organisers. In addition, the reuse and adaptation of existing venues also removed the risk of new stadia becoming ‘white elephants’, while allowing the available funding to be focused on creating new facilities in areas of need; improving the local environment around the existing venues; and creating better transport and infrastructure routes between these locations.

Upcoming Course: Responsible Retrofit of Traditional Buildings

The day long course, featuring the Sustainable Traditional Buildings Alliance (STBA) Retrofit Guidance Wheel, will be held on 28th October at Edinburgh College.
